Those two simple words come up during a Freemason's experiences during their first degree and are barely given a second glance as they go speeding past. After all, they're just referring to what the individual has been through and the lesson learned right?

What we don't realize is that our daily lives are filled with trials and we don't give them a second thought either. Every decision we make, whether we are aware of that decision or not, is itself a small trial. Freemasonry is a philosophy, a way of life, it's not something you just put on and take off when you feel like it. The true test is how you act and respond to things when none of your Brethren are watching.

When someone cuts you off in traffic, how do you respond? Do you blare the horn of your car and maybe give the other driver that single finger salute we were told not to use as kids? That my friend was a trial. How you responded to that particular moment is a small part of what defines you. Did you take that instant to subdue those passions, take a deep breath, and let the moment pass, or did you simply respond without thought?

Each and every day, in each moment of those days, we are put to the test, to be a Freemason, or not. It's not about the titles, or the clothes. It's not about who we know or whether we can recite letter perfect ritual, it's about whether we choose to follow the tenets of Freemasonry. It's about the belief that by following what we are taught in our lessons, to make them a part of our very fabric, that we not only better ourselves but by extension, improve those around us.
Freemasonry isn't easy, if it was, everyone would be a Brother and the world would be the better for it.
So I ask, are you ready to be tried again?
