While communication isn't specific to Freemasonry it has it's place and lately I've been a bit concerned about it. In an age where nearly everyone has in their pocket the ability to "reach out and touch someone" we seem to be in a period of heightened disconnect.
I personally lost track of more items and events that I could possibly count. Now, I will freely admit some of it is of my own doing, forgetting to write something down or remembering where I wrote it down is not what I'm focusing on here. I'm talking about not communicating these things.
I can already hear the "but" coming, and the typical one is that you've posted it on Facebook. I hate to admit this folks, not everyone lives and dies by Facebook, some choose not to use the platform (I'm one of them) and we all need to realize that.
It's not just Facebook, it's the text messages, the emails, the calendars, they're all good useful tools to keep folks informed, but are you using them all? Are those you're trying to reach using any of them?
Email lists need to be refreshed, cross posting to multiple social media feeds, websites, calendars, there are companies that employ folks to do all this, we're asking volunteers to use their most limited resource, their time, to try and keep up even when they have work and family commitments.
There is no easy solution, and there's isn't a single one for every situation, but it is worth the conversation with those involved. Take the time to talk about how you want to share information and updates, who's going to be responsible for putting the word out, who's going to handle keeping contact lists up to date - an hour or two working through all these items will yield much better results and hopefully fewer, "no one told me about it."
Finally, if there is someone you feel needs to know about something, reach out to them directly. You shouldn't assume they are on some mailing list, or using the same social media systems as you are, pick up the phone, call and ask them.
Communication is the lifeblood of any institution, Freemasonry, notwithstanding, is among those that relies on it more than most - take the time to work on it.
