So often in life we start down a path, oftentimes without knowing where that path might lead. There are times when the path chooses us, and we only discover later that the path we are on is not the one for us.
Then there are those times, when you stray from the path, only to return to it later with a better understanding of the direction you are headed. This is where I find myself, returning to my path here to start the next adventure.
When I started thinking about writing a newsletter about Freemasonry, there were many ideas that floated through my head. I thought about the various symbols, history, and esoteric pieces that so many find interesting. In all of those cases, there are already a multitude of sites and places to obtain that info. So why would I consider writing this?
The answer to that is both simple and complicated.
It’s simple because I can give my own take on these items and share my point of view.
It’s complicated because I can give my own take on these items and share my point of view.
Six months ago I decided to take an extra week or two off as I was finding myself challenged to come up with a topic to write about. Yes, you did read that right, I was struggling to find material to write about despite the vastness of Freemasonry. So weeks turned into months, and before I knew it the seasons had changed, and I found myself in need of a change as well.
Masonic Musings was supposed to be about my own thoughts and opinions concerning Freemasonry, about my own journey, and sharing that with you. I somehow let my own thoughts and fears get in the way of doing that. I was worried that I wasn’t digging deep enough into a topic, that I didn’t have enough knowledge, or maybe I just wasn’t seasoned enough to be a voice you could listen to - so I stopped writing. It wasn’t something I intended to do, I simply wandered away for a bit and then found this path again.
As I sat there in the middle of the path, I felt the pull of Masonic Musings. I felt that desire to write again and to return to the original intent - to just share my thoughts about my journey and what I find interesting along the way. When I opened up my writer’s dashboard, I was surprised to see that everyone was still waiting for me. Some who have been here from the beginning, and many who have opted to subscribe even during the time I was “dark.” For that, I thank you all.
I hope that you will all continue to stay with me as I work on my rough ashlar (and it does need some work) and share my thoughts. It should be interesting, to say the least.
At the end of the day, it’s those of you that support Masonic Musings that make it all possible. If you aren’t sure how you can support Masonic Musings, here are a couple of ways you can do so.
First, and probable the best way you can support things here, is to share this post, or any of the others in the archive. It only takes a couple of minutes and will help spread the word about my ramblings.
Second, if you haven’t already so, please consider subscribing to Masonic Musings. This will let you get every free issue sent directly to your inbox.
A quick word about the paid option. My goal here is to provide my thoughts and opinions to the widest audience possible, so I’ll be following a model similar to NPR. The vast majority of my postings will be freely available, but there will be some, that only those that have paid subscriptions will have access to. I just want to be clear and transparent on that.
If you have read this far, my thanks, and be sure to share any thoughts or opinion in the comments below.
Beginning the next adventure
Nice to see you writing again, Scot. I'm still in the middle of an extended vacay from my own writing, but expect I'll return to it eventually. Meanwhile, I look forward to reading more of your essays. I appreciate your thoughtfulness and sharing your reflections. :)
I'm very glad to know that you are going to be writing again!
